ktvu was first to break the story of tolltakers getting robbed at gunpoint at the carquines bridge. today, the chp says they've got their men behind the crime. good afternoon. i'm tori campbell. three people are now in custody after a string of tollbooth robberies at the carquines bridge. new at noon, ktvu's claudine wong joins us live to explain who is in custody and the team effort it took to track them down. good afternoon, claudine. >> reporter: good afternoon. three men from vallejo behind bars at this hour for a series of robberies that took place here at the toll plaza. the chp said the robbers would pull up to the booth in ski masks, get out of the car, pull out a weapon and demand money. it happened at least ten times, starting at the end of 2011 through may of 2012. an estimated 5,000 stolen. >> i think it was a crime of

opportunity. >> reporter: this man says he figured out who the suspects were in august. david more rales was already behind bars for a different crime. christopher miller was arrested last wednesday in fair field. yesterday morning, 43-year-old robert white was arrested for a traffic stop in vallejo. napa found evidence of the robberies while serving search warrants in a different investigation. >> during the search warrants on those residences, we found evidence of other crimes in several different counties. >> we found associates of those people and vehicles they had driven through our computer data system. >> reporter: but with the men behind bars, the question now remains what else were the suspects up to. >> the investigation is still going. i'm still -- i'm hoping to

uncover that. >> reporter: so of the ten armed robberies here, three have been linked to the suspects. but then this investigation continues and the chp says there could be more arrests. live here at the carquines bridge, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, claudine. we have new details now in a deadly fire last night in san francisco's ingleside heights neighborhood. investigators say it's being considered accidental. firefighters say when they arrived just after 8:30 p.m., flames and smoke were pouring from the windows at the house on st. charles avenue. the fire appears to have started in the kitchen and spread to other parts of the house. the body of the woman who lived there, 61-year-old dean burnett, was found on the second floor of the pumping house. her neighbors say they are shaken by her death. >> i was there and i seen the firefighters bring her body down. they put her right there by the garage. i was there. nobody told me anybody. neighbors asked me was that

dean andy confirm it was dean -- and i did confirm it was dean. >> reporter: firefighters put the -- >> firefighters put the fire out within a half an hour. the cause of the fire is under investigation. san jose police are looking for a hit-and-run driver who killed a pedestrian last night. the collision happened around 5:45 near white and quimby road. police say the victim was crossing the street when a dark suv or van hit him. the driver took off south on white road. people in the san jose neighborhood were shocked. >> i think it's sad, you know. i see that too much and i read about it and i don't like it. >> the coroner's office told ktvu this morning they were having trouble finding the victim's family and he appeared to be in his 50s. a construction accident injured a man this morning around 8:45 in the 3800 block of brickway boulevard near the santa rosa airport.

according to those at the scene, a 70-year-old man was on top of a large mechanical lift when it toppled to the ground. he was taken by ambulance to santa rosa memorial hospital. no record on the extent of his injuries. a group began to occupy a bank in san francisco. this is part of a national effort to mark the anniversary of "occupy our homes." brian flores is live to tell us what is happening right now. >> reporter: good afternoon. this is the one-year anniversary of the movement. what you are seeing behind me is a group of foreclosed or about to be foreclosed homeowners that decided to occupy this bank branch in bayview. [chanting] >> reporter: the group which included members of the naacp started marching around 11:00 and were able to enter their way into the bank going past guards and setting up crime

scene around the bank. the group says they are ed fed up about the amount of foreclosures and racist lending in the bayview. some say they just want wells fargo to modify their loans fairly. >> i've witnessed many people first -- i've met many people face to face across san francisco, heard stories of people across the country, i've noticed the specific story of larry folkes who is being evicted from wells fargo from a house that belonged to his family for many decades. >> i've been personally affected by this. not as a homeowner but a renter. in the last two years, the homes that i have been in have been foreclosed on. so what happens, people -- so what happens, people will end up being homeless because of this. >> fight foreclosure! >> reporter: again, a group of about 64 foreclosed homeowners

entered the bank branch. some san francisco police officers did show up and escorted the group outside. the department of justice did settle with wells fargo for $125 million to settle this claim. i just got a statement from wells fargo about this. it says in part, wells fargo is part of the solution to help revitalize neighborhoods and support homeownership. it goes on to say, since january of 2009, wells fargo has helped customers through $5.7 in principal forgiveness and also helped customers with loan modifications. back to you. >> thank you, brian. what could have been a routine traffic stop this morning, resulted in a crash that shut down a busy san francisco intersection for hours. police say the driver crashed into a fire hydrant and scaffolding around 3:30 a.m. at essex and folsom after police tried to pull him over for runed a red light.

the driver lost control after turning the corner onto essex street which leads to a bay bridge -- to the bay bridge onramp. the driver was injured but the extent of his injuries are not yet known. oakland police are investigating the hit-and-run accident that slightly injured a police officer in the 600 block of washington street. a vehicle hit him and sped off. the officer suffered minor injuries and did not need to go toles hospital. no arrests -- to the hospital. no arrests have been made in the case. it's crab season. but local fishermen's boats are not budging from the docks. it's all because of a price war over crab. tara moriarty joins us live from the newsroom to explain what is making the strike worse. good afternoon, tara. >> reporter: good afternoon. more than 100 local crab fisher boats have not left the harbor but some oregon fishermen is hate hitting the -- are feeling

the pinch. one boat offloading was from oregon. before thanksgiving, fishermen were earning $3 a pound and demand took a dip and the prices plunged. and that's caused a shortage of the crab in the bay area. the dispute started on sunday when crab boat skippers heard that they were planning to cut the prices to $1.80 for fresh crab. >> we started at 3 bucks. we fished for a couple of weeks before the wind came up and now the wind has died off. we're ready to go fishing again. we want the same 3 bucks. our expenses are the same and there's less crab in the water. >> reporter: now he says he has $2.7 million tied up in his boat and he's sick of local strikes trying to hold him hostage. >> these guys are trying to write every law they can to keep people from fishing. they've gone on strike for

unattainable prices getting us to tieup. >> you will be hard pressed to find any crab in the supermarket right now. that could change on monday. the oregon market opens on monday. live from the newsroom, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco health officials are learning thesh -- are alerting the public about an outbreak of meningitis in new york city. a dozen cases have been confirmed in gay men over the past year. three in the past six weeks. no cases have been reported in san francisco. experts recommend men who are at risk of becoming infected to be vaccinated against the disease. there's new information this noontime about a homicide in pleasant hill. detectives from the contra costa sheriff's department have arrested 38-year-old james riley. they say he and the victim, 47- year-old jerald nagle, were fighting at a homeless

encampment before nagle was killed. his body was found around 9:00 p.m. at the offramp of 680 and concord avenue. an autopsy is set for later today. reilly is being held on $1 million bail. and an update on a story we've been following since yesterday morning. berkeley police have identified a woman killed tuesday night while riding her bike. 50-year-old pamela mullin was shot next to longfellow middle school on sacramento street. it's unclear if she was targeted. so far no arrests have been made. the fate of a pit bull who attacked a u.s. park patrol officer's horse in san francisco is scheduled to be determined this afternoon. the dog attacked stoney, the police horse, last august at crissy field. animal control officials ordered the dog named charlie to be put to death. but his owner appealed so there will be ahearing in an-- a hearing in animal court at 2:00 to decide whether to dairy --

a milestone in the construction of the 49er stadium is being marked with a special ceremony. ktvu's janine de la vega joins us live to explains the signature of the structural steel landmark. good afternoon, janine. >> reporter: right behind me you can see what this $1.2 billion stadium looks like. it's pretty massive. in four months, look how much progress has been made. today, the last two beams at the very top of the stadium will be put in. let's take a live look from a camera that gives you sort of a different angle from the stadium where you can see what the -- what the structure really looks like, all of the cranes and the construction equipment inside there. now, in about two and a half hours, a ceremony will be held here to celebrate a construction milestone. this is one of the two beams that's been painted gold and will be hoisted up 200 feet in the air and placed at the very

highest point of the stadium. once the beams are put into place, the entire framework will be complete. construction workers began this process in july, lifting 50 pieces of steel every day. today, the 49ers' management, players, staff, city officials, as well as the 570 construction workers will be signing their guys on the gold beams to mark this event. >> what will happen later in the afternoon in the ceremony, the steel will be hoisted up to the stadium, the upper most part and it will be forever encased in the building. >> reporter: the 49ers say it's scheduled to hope in the 2014 season and the construction is on time. there's still seats available. 70% of the season ticketholders have committed to buying seats in the new stadium. right now in appreciation, lunch is being held for the construction workers and staff who has helped to build this

ocean preserve from bodega bay to point arena in mendocino county. the protection will be california's largest ocean preserve in 20 years and has been endorsed by governor jerry brown. the oakland police department has agreed to hand over authority of the command staff to a court-appointed director. that move came in response to the threat of a federal takeover of the department. oakland has failed to meet a federal judge's order to make rerms agreed to in the settlement of a police brutality case nearly ten years ago. >> we've been orking hard to demonstrate to the courts and the public that we can police ourselves and this department can constitute -- practice constitutional policing. >> a court must approve the handoff of the department to a federal director. well, somewhat of a change with our weather presentation for today. no rain to talk about.
